Joanne M. Malenock, Phd,
of the Oakland section of Pittsburgh, on Thursday, February 22, 2024.
The only child of William and Mary Malenock spent her life in quiet service to
others. Pursuing her interest in nutrition, she was awarded a PhD upon
completion of her studies. During her studies and immediately after receiving her
degree, she worked on ground breaking studies of the impact of diet on diabetes.
She became a professor in the school of nursing at the University of Pittsburgh
and also taught on the faculty of Carlow University and Duquesne University in
their respective schools of nursing.
She remained involved with McKees Rocks where she was born and spent most of
her life. When Focus on Renewal began acting on behalf of the residents of
McKees Rocks who were not fully represented at the time, Joanne worked behind
the scenes as a source of guidance to the public members of Focus on Renewal.
She maintained a strong commitment to Focus on Renewal and served many
years on the board of its health care center.
She was among a group of individuals who were interested in meeting the
nutritional needs of Allegheny County residents. This group founded Just Harvest
which as it developed created the forerunner of the Greater Pittsburgh Food
Bank.
For many years, Joanne was involved with the Oratory, the Catholic University
parish for the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University and Chatham
University, preparing the first Communion classes for a generation.
After her retirement, she volunteered with Ten Thousand Villages in Squirrel Hill,
Family House, and tutored English as a second language.
There will be no visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday,
March 1, 2024 at St. Mary’s worship site of Archangel Gabriel Parish 1011 Church
Ave McKees Rocks. All are asked to meet at the church.
In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank,
1 N. Linden St., Duquesne, PA 15110
Interment will follow at St. Mark's Cemetery, Kennedy Twp.
