Dr. Jeffrey A Hunker, Ph.D, age 56, where he resided in Shadyside passed away on Friday, May 31, 2013.

Dr. Hunker's professional work has always been at the intersection of technology, public and national security policy, and economics. He has sought always to work on challenging problems of national or multinational importance. This has led him variously to work on issues of the restructuring of the automotive industry, evolving models of competition in high tech industries, environmental technologies and policies, and most recently cyber security, terrorism and emerging threats to national security.

Dr Hunker went to Harvard, where he earned an AB in Engineering and Applied Physics (Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa) and a PhD in Business Administration (Managerial Economics). Dr Hunker was a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He served under President Clinton at the White House National Security Council as Senior Director for Critical Infrastructure, and before that as the first Director of the Federal inter-agency Critical Infrastructure Assurance Office (CIAO).

Prior to beginning his work in cyber security and national security, he was Senior Policy Advisor and Deputy Assistant to the Secretary of Commerce. He have also worked as a management consultant (BCG) and a Wall Street investment banker.

After 8 years at Carnegie Mellon University as Professor of Technology and Public Policy, Dr Hunker went into private practice as an author, researcher and advisor (Jeffrey Hunker Associates LLC).

For a time he was a music concert promoter, focusing on bands in the lower half of the top forty. He was an avid supporter of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.  In his off hours, Dr Hunker read a lot, tried to improve his French and German, train for marathons, and go camping, canoeing, ice skating and skiing. He also like to garden.  He has been known to state that "I'm not a bad cook either".

He is the devoted son of Walter Hunker and the late Evelyn Hunker, loving brother of Dr Susan (Dr James) Cowman and nephews James, Walter and Arthur Cowman.
